19th July

19th July Wednesday. Back again in New York
where Nellie, Mildred and I saw “Man
of La Mancha
, it was really great,
not everybody’s cup of tea, but certainly
ours, afterwards we met Michells’ Blanche [?]
and all went to dinner, what a wonderful
person she is, afterwards took a stroll
through Greenwich Village, then back to Elizabeth.

[Man of La Mancha was a Broadway production, the original 1965 production ran for over 2000 performances, and won multiple Tonys. A later film starred Peter O’Toole]

18th July

18th July. Tuesday. Arrived in New York
before noon, met Millie’s friend Ethel,
took a bus to the United Nations Building
and it is certainly wonderful, there
wasn’t any session on, but took a
tour with a guide, a most charming
young girl, she explained everything and
everywhere to us, would have missed
it for anything. As the session is expected
to start on Thursday at 11.30 A.M. hope to go
again.

13th July

13th July. Thursday. Got up early as
usual, had a bath then breakfast
got some mail, and wrote some
letters, and cards, had lunch
then Jack took us to New York,
did a wonderful tour of the
East Side, one is almost transpor
-ted to the “Der Hame” some of the people
here have not changed mode
of life and clothes since they came
over. Came back home, had a
wonderful dinner, and here I am
out on the porch doing my diary.
To-morrow G-d willing I am once
again on the move, this time to
Elizabeth where I am staying for
a fortnight.

10th July

10th July. Monday. Went this morning
with Blanche and her friend Rose
to “Alexanders” a huge departmental
store, Blanche bought a very nice
frock, and very reasonable. Came
home for lunch, did a spot of
writing and some crocheting. Barn
has now come in so we will have
dinner. A thunder and lightning
storm has arisen, so that has
put paid to any thought of going
out.

7th July

7th July Friday. My stalwart Jack
and Mary were at the station
last night to greet me, and what
a reception, you would have thought
I had been gone for a year. Have
packed my bags once more, and am
en route to Elizabeth. Arrived O.K.
and went with Blanch & Barn to
their temple which I found very
interesting.

[Attending Shul/Temple would have been interesting as, like the majority of British Jews, Minnie attended Orthodox synagogue while most North American congregations are in either Reform or Conservative movements. More here.]

30th June

30-6-67 Friday. Jack and Mary
drove me to New York, where I
got the bus for Montreal, and
Montreal here I come. Mary packed
me enough food to feed an army
Had the company of a nice
young man, whom I discovered
was Jewish. The weather wasn’t at
its best, but enjoyed the journey.
had a stop at Saratoga Springs
for 35 minutes, took me almost all
that time to get a drink. Next
stop Plattsburgh, then the American
Customs, then Montreal. Was met at
the station by Pitu and Irene.

28th June

28-6-67. Wednesday. Did a little
Shopping for Mary, and sure know
my way around here. After lunch went
with Mary & Jack to see a house, it
was something out of a Hollywood film,
belonged to a Jewish family who are
moving to Manhattan, were shown around
by the coloured maid in a magnificant
white uniform. This afternoon went
to New York had a grand time,
ate at a Dairy Restaurant then
went to Samuel’s Office and had
a wonderful examination of my
eyes, found I was suffering from a
slight attack of conjuctivitis, nothing
serious. Phoned Ray Dobbie, she
would hardly let me away, however
when she comes back from Chicago
she will phone me, and get
together.
