STREAMLINED CUSTOMS FACILITIES
NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Aerial Gateway to the United States
Typical of the attention given to passenger con-
venience are the new streamlined custom facilities
which speed incoming passengers through customs.
Passenger claims his own baggage and takes it
to any of 36 supermarket-type checkout counters
in each of the two custom halls in the building.
Once he is past this counter he is clear of customs.

early and Millie and I off to New
York again. Had a bing[e] shopping,

very tired, had lunch and back
to Elizabeth, watched Perry Mason

26th July

26th July. Wednesday. Off to New York
went to La Crepe for lunch and
had a crepe suzette filled with
eggs and mushrooms, which was
delicious. Went to see “South
Pacific
” it was wonderful, each
voice was sweeter than the
other, the male lead is “Tozzi” an
operatic singer, and besides his
wonderful voice, he is very handsome.
The show is in the New Lincoln Centre,
and after the show, we had a tour
of the buildings which a just to
wonderful. Had tea out in the
square, and back to Elizabeth.

[Giorgio Tozzi, who starred in this Richard Rogers produced revival of South Pacific, actually provided the voice for Rossano Brazzi’s singing in the 1958 film.]

23rd July

23rd July. Sunday. Went into New York
and had dinner at Barbara’s, she’s
most attractive, has a wonderful 10
roomed flat, everything in very good
taste & enjoyed myself very much, her
husband most interesting, he was
educated in the “Sorbonne” and lived
in Paris for 8 years. Came home, got
comfortable, Francis came in & didn’t get
to bed till very late.

20th July

20th July. Thursday. Off again to New York,
straight to the U.N. building, waited in
a queue for 2 hours to get into the
assembly rooms. Earphones in every seat,
and everything is translated in 5 languages.
A great hush and the President addressed
the meeting, asked if any delegate had
anything to say, the delegate from
Ireland got up and proposed an
adjournment till to-morrow at 2-30, this
was unanimous, so that was that, what
a disappointment for everybody. Came
out and had lunch in the U.N. cafe,
wrote some cards, and then went into
town, saw a most hilarious picture
A guide to the married man, never
laughed such a lot for years, what a
cast, could see it again, then
went in for tea, and back home to
Elizabeth, arrived tired by happy.
Had dinner, and am settling down to
do some writing.
