12th August. Saturday. Got up, had
a shower, then breakfast, and
completed my packing. Had an early
lunch, then went to Janets parents
en route for the bus. And then
Boarded the bus at 3.30 first stop
Chiga[go], was dark when we arrived,
it is certainly a very large & interesting
city. Changed bus & left at 12 o’clock,
made good progress but at 1-30A.M.
the bus broke down and had to stay
in it till a relief bus came at 6A.M.
Therefore 4 1/2 hours late.
11th August
11th August. Friday Breakfasted
wrote letters, did washing, then
motored with Janet to Kent and
met [Ilene?] at her university. She
took us all around and through
quite a lot of it. It was just
like a little township, and
very up to date, then had lunch
at a nice restaurant. Came back
to Cleveland, did my ironing and
began my packing. We all sat down to a
lovely dinner and then went visiting,
came home very late, and then to bed.
10th August
10th August. Thursday. Went again to
Bobbie Brooks, and saw more goods,
then went out for lunch, took
[“????”] for her test, which she
passed, then came home. Janets
parents came home for dinner, and
we had a lovely evening. Forgot to
mention that Janet took me to her
synagogue which is most wonderful,
never saw a place like it before.
The kitchens etc were out of this
world, and the synagogue is in
the middle of a large park.
Got a lovey surprise, Ethel
phoned me from L.A., about
11-30pm, was delighted to hear her
voice.
9th August
9th August Wednesday. Got up early &
went with Janet & the girls to a
manufacturers which had a sale, the
girls bought quite a few outfits. Came
home and dressed and went with
Janet to a “Hadashal” luncheon,
luncheons are the same all over the
world, Janet won the raffle which
was a picture drawn by an artist
at the luncheon. After the luncheon
went driving around then met
Sydney and Susan at a restaurant
where we had a wonderful smorgasbord
dinner, and after dinner, went to a
friends home, came home very tired.
8th August
8th August. Tuesday. Breakfasted, wrote
some letters, did a little washing and
then lunch. Had a lazy afternoon
then dinner. After dinner we all
went for a run to the Chagrin Falls,
went out for a stroll, had ices and
back home.
[Chagrin Falls]
7th August
7th August Monday. Went to Stouffers
for lunch, a beautiful place, just
like “Fullers” in a grand [seale?].
Janet took me to all the cultural
Bldgs, which are many and beautiful,
then motored around Lake Erie, which
is something worth seeing, parts were
full of yachts etc, almost like Loch
Lomond, then went to “Richmond Mall”,
very like “Severance” but bigger, had
afternoon tea, then home very tired.
Had dinner, Janets parents came
up and spent the evening with us, a
very charming couple indeed.
6th August
6th August Sunday. Breakfasted,
attended to mail, relaxed, then
lunched, Janet took me downstairs to
her store, think she had more
food than [boker’s?] shop, and as for
her deep freeze, had half a cow
cut up in various cuts, could easily
do me for a couple of years. Went
touring round Cleveland, had dinner
in a Chinese restaurant, then went
to one of Sidney’s brothers, saw a film
show there, stayed until after 12, then
home.
5th August
5th August. Saturday. Got up and after
breakfast Janet & I went to her
parents home. Then we went to her
mother-in-laws, collected her, and
went to Diamonds for lunch. Walked
all through “Severance” which is a
most interesting place, the shops are
beautiful and so is the merchandise.
Came home for dinner, then went
to see a film “Divorce The American
Style”, very very funny. After the
film a party of eight went to
Solomons to eat, stayed there till
1 A.M. and then home.
[Severance was Cleveland’s first indoor shopping center, and at a time when malls were still something of a novelty. Severance opened in late 1963, but by 1972 was already undergoing its first remodelling to compete with newer malls.]
“Divorce American Style” stars Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds. Romantic comedies about divorce seemed to be the thing in 1967.]
4th August
4th August. Friday. Arrived in
Cleveland after a pleasant journey,
was met by Janet and her father
a very sweet gentleman. Got to
Janet’s home, unpacked, had a shower,
then breakfast. Went with Janet to the
Jewish old age home, where she collected
packed meals, and distributed them
to old people with the aid of her
father, who is most active. Janet
showed me around Cleveland, then
came home. Sydney and the girls came
in, and he made Kiddush, on their
new bread board, with which they are
thrilled. Had a lovely dinner, also
a very pleasant evening and then
retired.
3rd August
3rd Aug. Thursday. This morning we are
having a thunder & lightning storm,
the rain is torrential, and hope it
will clear, as I leave to-night for
Cleveland, and once more I will be
on the roam. Will conclude this
entry as I will have to pack.
