20th September
20th September Wednesday. After a terrible night was glad to get up, most of the passengers seemed to be holding parties, the noise went on till morning, at 3.30am passed a ship all lit up and at 5.30am we docked at Cherbourg, passengers disembarked and passengers embarked. Had my last shower on the Elizabeth, went down for breakfast, got delivery of my photos, wrote some letters to the family in the USA and enclosed pictures, which I will mail in London, got my voorsht from the Steward who had it in the deep freeze and it is like solid ice, met a nice family by the name of Fletcher, he is going to play professional golf at Gleneagles, they have a family of 3 children who are all very well behaved. 12.30pm and now my last meal, I must say a perfect finish to a perfect holiday, and now await disembarkation at Southampton and the Custom boys. The Cunard have slipped up at the last moment by letting the passengers off before all the luggage & we had to wait in Southampton waiting room for more than an hour and now the lads, mine commented on my cases, so I told him I was away for 4 months, told him I had nothing of value, then he asked about my mink coat so I told him how much I could spend on presents etc from my £50 allowance, he commiserated with me and I didn’t even have to open 1 bag. Another scramble to get a porter to take the luggage but shared one with my table companion, Stephen Katz and at long last on the train to London. Arrived in Waterloo, bid Stephen good bye and all the best, got a taxi to Euston left the luggage in the LL office and have booked a sleeper on the 10.15pm home. Sent off cables to Brooklyn and New Jersey, and spoke to Anna on the phone and am now going for the train to take me back to my loved ones in Glasgow.

19th Sept. Tuesday. Awoke, had my shower and now breakfast, surprisingly. The sun is out quite strong and a lot of brave souls are in swimming, finished my crochet on deck, so that’s that, went for lunch and for the first time have gone to the cinema, saw ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ an excellent performance by Burton and Taylor, as usual hadn’t taken any afternoon tea, as I am frantically trying to shed the extra avoirdupoirs I put on in the U.S.A. but unfortunately no results yet, came down, had a bath and changed for dinner, most excellent, there seems to be general excitement on board as tomorrow Wednesday we are coming in to Southampton, saw a good cabaret and had a go at bingo, but my usual luck, nothing, came down to pack And the time is now 1.30am and so to bed.
18th September
18th Sept. Monday. Got up, had my shower, then down to breakfast, great excitement on the ship, the Queen Mary is due to pass us at approximately 9.30am, never saw the dining room so quickly emptied, everybody with the same idea, to see the Mary on her last voyage. 9.30am on the dot, she appeared, as regal as her name, both ships exchanged salutes and if anything it was a sad but momentous occasion. Did some crocheting then lunch. Was out on deck for a couple of hours, but it got too cold and blowy, so had to come inside. Came down, changed and went up for dinner which was most delicious, had my picture taken at the table with Stephen Katz who is ordering them and has promised to send me on one, marvellous won 2 dollars at the horses, better luck than bingo, and now the Fancy Hat Parade, some most original and fantastic creations, and now for my cabin, I see all the ropes have been put up again, not too good a sign, the ship is certainly going some now, so hope for the best, good night & bed precisely 1am.
17th September
17th Sept Sunday. Had my usual shower, went for breakfast but my table companion didn’t show up, probably is sleeping late. As it is very blowy had a walk round the deck and am now in the library attending to my diary and writing letters. Had lunch and Mr Katz appeared, seemingly he only just got up. Went out for a little while, rather cold, could put on my mink coat but didn’t, went into the library, selected book and am busy both reading and crocheting. Got changed for dinner, my clothes are so tight on me that the Steward had to help me into my frock, went for dinner, then saw a good cabaret, found my usual dish of fruit in my cabin and in to bed.
16th September
16th Sept Saturday, had breakfast and glad to say the weather has improved, been out on deck all morning, ordered photos of Mary and I as we entered the ship on Thursday night, had a most wonderful lunch and out on deck again, didn’t bother with the film shows, stayed on deck till almost dinner time and saw a most wonderful sunset, come down, changed and went for dinner which as usual was most excellent. Then went upstairs for bingo, but as usual no luck, saw a splendid cabaret show and then to bed.
15th September
15th Sept Friday. Awoke, had shower and noticed a slight sway on the boat, went to the dining room & everywhere where possible were the ship’s ropes, had breakfast solitaire, had the same waiter as my outward trip, he told me that we are going into the tail end of the hurricane. Had boat drill, then tried to go out on deck but was blown away, came down for lunch, lots of the passengers were conspicuous by their absence and we are truly in it. All portholes have been closed & some of the waves are almost as high as the ship. Dinner time & I have company at my table a young man Mr Katz from Jersey is going to Cambridge to study, asked him why he hadn’t appeared before, he told me he was very sick all night and day.
14th September
14th Sept Thursday. Had shower then breakfast. Devorah called to wish me Bon Voyage, & brought me a lovely n/gown, had lunch then packed my remaining bits and pieces went with the family to see a house for Devorah, had a last look round my Avenue J, came back home, had tea, Jackie Walter called in to wish me Bon Voyage and brought a big box of candies. Went into town for a dinner, phoned Elizabeth & spoke to everyone but Nellie, glad she is improving. Am now on the ship with my stalwarts Mary and Jack, found a beautiful vase of flowers from Elizabeth, Mary handed me a package and when I opened it there was a most beautiful prayer book and apron, all Israeli, and a beautiful pair of bedroom slippers, now Samuel has arrived and has brought a magnificent bouquet of flowers, they stayed on the boat until almost departure, saw them off at the gangway and a fond farewell. Arriving back in my cabin I found a farewell Bon Voyage cable from Al, Ethel and Millie, who are holidaying in Las Vegas, up to the Carribean room for sandwiches and coffee, and back to my cabin which is incidentally the same one as I came out in, so therefore I feel quite at home. Next to bed and couldn’t sleep so sat up and at 3.30am (Friday) the ship sailed and I had a long last look at New York.

12th Sept Just got up, had a shower, said au revoir to Millie and Maurice, Max called for me at 11-30 and took me to the bus, said au revoir to Nellie & Max. Arrived in New York and while getting off the bus the handle came off my case, got it fixed in a store and now am back at Brooklyn. Sorry to say Mary is not too well, had lunch then started to pack, found I needed another case and had to go out and buy one, finished packing and now await the men for the luggage, had dinner, Millie phoned from Elizabeth and was glad to hear her voice. Zelda and Mel called and we had a lovely evening together and all too soon they went away.
